Converting pictures to avatars... you just need any program that will let you trim and resize a photo. Picasa is a pretty good free photo manager from Google, you can try that. Or it's good odds that your computer came with something that will do that for you, too. You just need to resize your photo to 100x100 pixels (not very big!) and then you can upload them to your profile in "Profile", "Personality".

If you need more help, PM me your email and I'll get in touch with you so you can send me a photo or two and I'll trim them down for you. Small photos are better for this.

Best thing to do is just pic an image you like and then re-size it to about 100 x 100 pixels. Most graphics viewers should be able to do this for you.  After re-sizing, the file size should also be no greater than 1 MB or so. That should make them good to go.
